Bilateral relations between Luxembourg and Greece
Luxembourg and Greece maintain excellent bilateral relations, which are evident from a political, economic, and cultural perspective.
Maritime sector
A commercial vessel from Greece (Mediterranean Car Carriers Line S.A. – MCCL) has been registered with the Maritime Affairs Commissioner (CAM) since 1 October 2025.
Accreditation of a second vessel is underway.

On the occasion of the 16th Annual Greek Shipping Forum - a flagship event bringing together major shipowners, banks, lawyers and key players in the global maritime transport sector - a dinner reception was organized at the residence on 5 February, with representatives of the Register (CAM), the Luxembourg Maritime Cluster and the LSE (Stock exchange).

Greek banking presence in Luxembourg and consolidation of private banking operations of two Greek banks in Luxembourg
Eurobank and another one of the four major Greek banks are consolidating their private banking activities for their clients (as well as clients from Mediterranean countries, Bulgaria and the United Arab Emirates in the case of Eurobank) in Luxembourg.
Swiss bank EFG has been expanding its banking operations in Luxembourg for many years.
Air links between our two capitals
Luxair serves eight islands during the high season, Aegean operates three flights per week between our two capitals.
A bilateral Chamber of Commerce has been established in Luxembourg

On 31 May 2006, a bilateral Luxembourg–Greece Security Agreement concerning the exchange and reciprocal protection of classified information was negotiated in Athens between representatives of the two national Security Authorities, in the presence of the Ambassador.

There have been exchange visits since 2000:
- State visit of the President of the Hellenic Republic, G. Stephanopoulos, to Luxembourg in 2001
- Official visit of the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, J.-C. Juncker, to Athens in 2002 (during which he delivered a speech before a large audience in the former Parliament)
- Greek EU Presidency during the first half of 2003 (European Council in Thessaloniki)
- Visit by Prime Minister Juncker to Northern Greece (Orestiada and Komotini) in 2003
- Olympic Games in Athens and Paralympic Games in 2004 (attended by Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess)
- Luxembourg’s EU Presidency in the first half of 2005 (two working visits to Luxembourg by Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis)
- Meeting between Prime Ministers Jean-Claude Juncker and Kostas Karamanlis in Athens on 5 October 2005 (on the sidelines of Mr. Juncker’s participation in the Athens meeting of the European Central Bank’s Governing Council)
- On 11 January 2006, the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, and President of the Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker, received the Greek Minister of Finance, George Alogoskoufis, in Luxembourg. Discussions focused mainly on the budgetary situation of the Hellenic Republic, which had been subject to an excessive deficit procedure opened in July 2004 under the Stability and Growth Pact.
- On 24-25 October 2019, Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel came to Athens to attend an ALDE meeting with a speech. He met with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Mayor of Athens Konstantinos Bakoyannis and President of Syriza Alexis Tsipras.
- On 12–13 September 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn traveled to Athens to attend the concert marking the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Luxembourg and Greece, as well as the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Luxembourg Embassy in Greece. During his visit, he held meetings with the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Mr. Dimitris Kairidis, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Giorgos Gerapetritis. A working-lunch meeting on the topic of “Migration and Asylum” was organized at the Residence, bringing together the minister and representatives of UNHCR, FRONTEX, IOM, the Greek Refugee Council, and the Greek Commission for Human Rights.
- Visit of the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg Claude Wiseler and 5 members of the Chambre des Députés from 23 to 26 November 2025 and delegation. Meetings with officials in Athens.
